Our History

TIDE Swimming began as TIDE Swim Team in January 1988. The team was established with fewer than twenty swimmers and since then has grown to over 750 athletes from Swim School to Swim Team to TIDE Masters.

A team always with a strong sense of community, TIDE Swim Team aligned itself with the Jewish Community Center and the Boys Club prior to its current long-standing relationship with the YMCA of South Hampton Roads.

In 2000, the organizations teamed to construct a then state-of-the-art air structure over Mount Trashmore YMCA'S 25-meter pool. The TIDE - YMCA partnership continued to change the face of swimming in Hampton Roads with the 2015 opening of our new 50m Myrtha pool, located at the YMCA's newest facility: the Princess Anne Family YMCA. TIDE further extended its reach in 2016 by adding two practice locations in Chesapeake at the Greenbrier and Great Bridge / Hickory Family YMCAs.

TIDE athletes have been world-ranked, US Olympic Team Trials qualifiers, USA National and USA Junior National qualifiers, Virginia Swimming Age Group and Senior level champions, and Virginia Swimming individual and relay record holders. They have established numerous USA Swimming National Top 16 and Top 10 reportable performances.

Now in 2023, having celebrated 35 years of cultivating a passion for swimming, TIDE Swimming continues to grow and attract new talent, both in the pool and on deck. Thank you all for being a part of the past, present, and future success of TIDE Swimming.

Tide Swimming is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
